Mobile Cinematography: Becoming a professional, Mobile cinematography; a source of income

It’s no news how much money your mobile phones can make you these days, first you need to leverage the use of platforms that enable such possibility; Instagram, Tiktok, Youtube and facebook.

It’s also important to note creativity is not learnt, it’s only ignited, creativity is somewhat peculiar to people’s thinking beliefs and thoughts but there are very few similarities that align them altogether.

Understanding the Grid: The grid is a simple but effective tool that can help you compose better shots. It divides your screen into thirds both horizontally and vertically, creating a 3×3 grid. By placing your subject or key elements along these lines or at their intersections, you can create more balanced and visually appealing compositions. But this is where it gets slightly different, you see for cameras you have the rule of thirds, that guides how you place a subject in frame and for better composition that makes the shots more cinematic and creatively captivating, but for phones they are slightly different especially when it comes to portrait mode, the best advice is to first always place your subject in the middle for your shots, then you can now check out what it may look like if placed at the first half or the last half of the grid, and take your shots according to what suits you best

Foreground Elements: Adding foreground elements can help create depth and dimension in your shots. Look for objects or elements in the foreground that can add visual interest and draw the viewer’s eye into the frame. Adding a foreground element is the first step to a more cinematic shot. Foreground element could be anything an object, a person, something blurred out just right in front of the model, or the focus of the shot

Utilizing Lighting: Lighting is crucial in cinematography, and it can make or break a shot. When shooting with a mobile phone, try to use natural light whenever possible. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight, as it can cause harsh shadows and overexposure. Instead, look for soft, diffused light, such as during the golden hour (the hour before sunset or after sunrise), which can create a warm, flattering glow.

Cleansing the Lens: A clean lens is essential for capturing clear, sharp images. Regularly clean your phone’s lens with a microfiber cloth to remove any dust, fingerprints, or smudges that may affect the image quality.

Composition: Composition is the arrangement of elements within the frame. Pay attention to the rule of thirds, leading lines, and symmetry to create visually appealing compositions.

Storage Space: Mobile phones have limited storage space, so it’s essential to manage your storage effectively. Delete unnecessary files, transfer files to a computer or external storage device, and consider using cloud storage options to free up space on your device.

Battery Life: Battery life is another critical factor to consider when shooting with a mobile phone. To conserve battery, close unnecessary apps, reduce screen brightness, and disable features like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use. One major challenge I’ve discovered is when shooting outside the sun and some other

Shooting in the Sun: Shooting in bright sunlight can be challenging, as it can cause harsh shadows and overexposure. To avoid this, try shooting in the shade or using a diffuser to soften the light. You can also use the HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode on your phone to capture more detail in both the highlights and shadows.

Using Gimbals: Gimbals are stabilizers that can help you capture smooth, steady shots. They are especially useful when shooting handheld or moving shots. Consider investing in a gimbal for your mobile phone to improve the quality of your footage.

Script and Pre-Planned Shots: Planning your shots in advance can help you tell a cohesive story and create a more professional-looking video. Write a script, create shot lists, and plan out your camera movements and angles before you start shooting.
